Grounding Agents in EMud Artificial Worlds

چکیده
This paper suggests that in the context of autonomous agents and generation of intelligent behavior for such agents, a more important focus should be held on the symbolic context that forms the basis of computer programs. Basically, software agents are symbolic entities living in a symbolic world and this has an eeect on how one should think about designing frameworks for their evolution or learning. We will relate the problem of symbol grounding to that of sensory information available to agents. We will then introduce an experimental environment based on virtual worlds called EMuds, where both human and artiicial agents can interact. Next, we show how it can be applied in the framework of multi-agent systems to address emergence based problems and report preliminary results. We then conclude with some ongoing and future work.

EMuds: Adaptation in Text-Based Virtual Worlds
This thesis introduces a methodological approach to artificial agent design. In an attempt to solve the symbol grounding problem of artificial intelligence, a new theoretical perspective on the agent-environment relation is explored and experimentation is led to motivate this methodology. From the original idea that in order to ground an agent in an environment, the agent’s representation mecha...
متن کاملOn some properties of grounding uniform sets of modal conjunctions
A language grounding problem is considered for nonuniform sets of modal conjunctions consisting of conjunctions extended with more than one modal operator of knowledge, belief or possibility. The grounding is considered in the context of semiotic triangles built from language symbols, communicative cognitive agents and external objects. The communicative cognitive agents are assumed to be able ...

متن کاملLearning probabilistic planning operators from noisy observations
Building agents which can learn to act autonomously in the world is an important challenge for artificial intelligence. While autonomous agents often have to operate in noisy, uncertain worlds, current methods to learn action models from agents’ experiences typically assume fully deterministic worlds. This paper presents a noise-tolerant approach to learning probabilistic planning operators fro...
متن کاملThe believability of Road Runner cartoons: logical consistency conquers unreality
Entertainment has always involved fictional characters in artificial settings. Effective use of artificial worlds and characters demands that the agents and worlds be believable and understandable. We examine the world and characters in the Road Runner cartoons, and show how the world, while not realistic, is internally consistent. We argue that the consistency of both the world and the actions...
